Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva torched for ‘totally unnecessary’ shot in humiliating loss to Australia

In a Test match to forget for Sri Lanka, one moment summed up the side's fortunes.

With the home side 5-179 against Australia, captain Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis were the last hope.

In the 40th over with Matt Kuhnemann bowling, the skipper played with the spin and hit Kuhnemann over mid-off for a boundary.

The next ball, he attempted the exact same shot but this time held out to Beau Webster in the covers and was dismissed for 39.

It was an incredibly irresponsible shot from Dhananjaya with Sri Lanka going from 5-114 to 6-179. His dismissal sparked a collapse with the hosts 9-209 in the space of seven overs.

Former Australian cricketer Greg Blewett was highly critical of the Sri Lankan leader after the dismissal.

"Absolute garbage from your captain, that's not good enough," Greg Blewett said on Seven.

"That is not a shot your captain needs to be playing in these circumstances … totally unnecessary."

Australia went on to win the match by an innings and 242 runs, inflicting Sri Lanka's heaviest ever defeat in Test cricket.
