‘Real privilege’: Brisbane Lions premiership coach Chris Fagan re-signs until end of 2027

Brisbane Lions premiership coach Chris Fagan has signed a contract extension, meaning he will lead the club until at least 2027.

It follows his side's triumphant 60-point grand final victory over Sydney in September, coming from fifth on the ladder to win the flag.

Fagan was already contracted for next year, and will be 66 when his latest extension comes to an end.

"I'm grateful that the club wants me to continue as coach for a few more years," Fagan said in a club statement on Thursday.

The coach took his Lions from 13th in round 12 to a premiership months later, as he managed to push through doubt from their supporter base.

"I am fortunate that Greg Swann and our board have always backed me in, particularly through the tough times," Fagan said.

Fagan never played football at V/AFL level, but had led the Lions since the end of 2016, including finals appearances in the last six seasons.

"The playing group is full of character and talent, and it has been a real privilege to coach them," he said.

"I look forward to all the challenges that lay ahead for us, safe in the knowledge that our players are fully committed to the process of continuous improvement and that we have a football department focussed on providing the optimal environment for this to occur."

Brisbane CEO Greg Swann lauded Fagan's ability to unite the playing group, admitting it was "easy" to keep him around the club.

"His on-field record speaks for itself having led the club to a Premiership this season, a grand final last year (2023) and six consecutive finals series in total," Swann said.

"What is as impressive is the culture he has helped create here, which sees everyone become the best version of themselves.

"He has taken this club from bottom of the ladder to a premiership, and we look forward to more success under his leadership."
