In short:

Ukraine is ready to accept an immediate 30-day ceasefire in the war with Russia, after meetings with the US in Saudi Arabia.

In exchange, the US has agreed to immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance with Ukraine.

What's next?

Washington will take the proposal to Russia, hoping to reach a full agreement.

Ukraine has expressed a willingness to accept an immediate 30-day ceasefire in the war with Russia, after meetings with the US in Saudi Arabia.

In exchange, the US has agreed to immediately lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance with Ukraine.

Ukrainian and US officials have been meeting in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, discussing the future of the three-year-long conflict.

In a joint statement by the Ukrainian and US delegations, the officials said the offer would now be taken to the Russians for approval.

The statement said Ukraine "expressed readiness" to accept a US proposal to enact a 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

The ceasefire "is subject to acceptance and concurrent implementation by the Russian Federation".

Talks between US and Ukraine

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US would take the offer to Russia, and that the ball was in Moscow's court.

"The president wanted this war to end yesterday … So our hope is that the Russians will answer 'yes' as quickly as possible, so we can get to the second phase of this, which is real negotiations," Mr Rubio told reporters in Jeddah.

Mr Rubio said Washington wanted a full agreement with both Russia and Ukraine "as soon as possible."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine welcomed this proposal and considered it positive, citing that "we are ready to take such a step" during his evening address.

"The United States of America has to convince Russia to do this," Mr Zelensky said.

"So we agree, and if the Russians agree, the ceasefire will work at that very moment," he added.

"The American side understands our arguments, perceives our proposals, and I want to thank President Trump for the constructive conversation between our teams."

The Trump administration has been pushing Ukraine into reaching a "deal" to end the more than three-year war with Russia.

Ukraine also pressed the US about including Europe in any peace negotiations during the talks in Saudi Arabia, amid frustration among European leaders that they are being squeezed out.

"We stick to our position: no decisions on the long-term security of Europe without Europe," Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said following the talks.

What has Russia said?

Moscow has previously rejected any temporary ceasefire.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was open to discussing a peace deal.

However, he has ruled out territorial concessions and said Ukraine must withdraw fully from four Ukrainian regions claimed and partly controlled by Russia.

In a post on social media platform X, Mr Zelenskyy said the US suggested "a 30-day full interim ceasefire, not only stopping missile, drone, and bomb attacks, not only in the Black Sea, but also along the entire front line".

He said Ukraine was "ready to accept this proposal", but said it could only take effect if Russia also accepted the terms.

"Our position remains absolutely clear: Ukraine has been seeking peace from the very first second of this war, and we want to do everything to achieve it as soon as possible and in a reliable way — so that war does not return," Mr Zelenskyy said.
