In short:

Tottenham was defeated 4-0 by Liverpool in the second leg of their League Cup semifinal.

Liverpool progressed to the final via a 4-1 aggregate.

What's next?

Postecoglou remains under pressure to keep his job as Spurs manager.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou says Spurs were outclassed in their 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool in the second leg of their League Cup semifinal at Anfield.

Holders Liverpool booked its return ticket to Wembley for the final against Newcastle United after advancing with a 4-1 aggregate across the two legs.

Postecoglou said Liverpool "deserved the victory".

"They were the far better team," he told Sky Sports.

"We were not able to get a grip of the game. They were too good for us.

"We allowed them to get into the game and we were not as aggressive as we needed to be. We didn't get the game started off in the right footing.

"It was very difficult for us to wrestle that control back."

Postecoglou is set to face more speculation about his future as Spurs manager.

Retired England defender Jamie Carragher said Spurs lacked direction under the Australian.

"Ange Postecoglou is a manager who is just trying to find something and what he's trying is not working," Carragher told Sky Sports.

"This goes back to last season. I think they've lost 20 out of the last 45 games. It's an awful lot.

"We're talking almost 50 per cent of the Premier League games he's lost going back.

"This is not just this season. Tottenham had such a brilliant start to his first season. They were top of the league after 10 games … since then the record is horrendous."

Spurs had led 1-0 on aggregate after winning at home in the first leg last month.

But Liverpool levelled the aggregate score at 1-1 against the injury-depleted visitors on Friday AEDT, when Cody Gakpo fired in a right-foot shot in the 34th minute from a Mohamed Salah cross.

Salah added his name to the scoresheet, shooting high into the net from the penalty spot in the 51st minute after Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky downed Darwin Nunez.

Dominik Szoboszlai slotted home the third and Virgil van Dijk completed the rout with an 80th-minute header.

"We knew the first 20 minutes we had to keep it solid in terms of our decision making and to give them a second goal is disappointing," Postecoglou said.

Postecoglou said the players were "very disappointed".

"We had a great opportunity, but unfortunately we didn't grab it," he said.
