‘You’re kidding… shot of the day’: Aussie stuns PGA tour with shot off a tree root

Australian golfer Cam Davis fell short of winning the Pebble Beach Pro-Am but he left fans, commentators and fellow players gobsmacked with one insane shot on his final hole.

The 29-year-old from Sydney was in the hunt for the trophy and only a couple of shots off the lead, until Rory McIlroy hit the accelerator and raced away to win the title.

Davis collected $1.3 million for finishing in a tie for fifth, thanks in large to a birdie on the 18th on Monday morning.

He looked more likely to drop a shot on the par-5 last when his third shot landed on a tree root.

Davis had to contend with the tree root as well as a large bunker in between himself and the green.

"I don't know what he's going to try and do with this," CBS caller Colt Knost noted in commentary.

"I think best case scenario is probably just try to dump it in the bunker right in front of him, and try get up and down for par."

What Davis did next had the commentators close to speechless.

The Aussie boldly attacked the ball and hacked it off the tree root, clearing the bunker and somehow getting enough spin on the ball to make it stop about a foot from the cup.

"Oh, come on now! You're kidding… shot of the day," Knost, who was watching from on the course, proclaimed.

"Wow."

The crowd went wild as Davis high-fived his caddie before knocking the putt in for birdie.

"There's going to be a lot of people that come here for that bucket list experience of playing Pebble Beach," CBS commentator Jim Nantz said.

"They are going to drop a ball right there, at the base of that tree, and say 'watch, I saw Cam Davis do this'."

Davis missed the lion's share of the $32 million purse as he finished four shots shy of McIlroy.

The Aussie has won twice on the PGA Tour and is ranked 58th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
