Wallabies to play Japan in surprise first as Eddie Jones showdown confirmed

The Wallabies will be out for vengeance when they travel to Japan to take on the Eddie Jones-led Brave Blossoms in Tokyo on October 25.

It will be the first time the Wallabies have met their former coach since their split following a disastrous 2023 World Cup.

The match will also mark another surprising first. It will be the first time the Wallabies and Japan have ever done battle in Tokyo.

The game will follow the British Irish Lions' tour of Australia, and the Wallabies' Rugby Championship games against Argentina and the All Blacks.

"Rugby Australia and Japan Rugby Football Union enjoy a strong, productive relationship and share a rich rugby tradition," Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh said.

"We are delighted the Wallabies will play the Brave Blossoms in front of a large, passionate crowd in Tokyo.

"The Test match will also serve as excellent preparation for the Wallabies ahead of the Autumn Internationals in the northern hemisphere."

The Wallabies have not travelled to Japan since a COVID-19 affected 2021 tour.

JRFU chairman Kensuke Iwabuchi said it would be a "delight" to host the Wallabies.

"Hosting Australia at Tokyo's National Stadium promises to be a spectacular occasion, and we look forward to welcoming the many Australian fans who live here in Japan, as well as those travelling from abroad," he said.

"As the hosts of the next men's Rugby World Cup in 2027, Australia's visit is sure to evoke fond memories of our own World Cup in 2019 – not only for Brave Blossoms fans, but also for the large Wallaby contingent who contributed so much to the spectacle and atmosphere of the tournament."
