‘Utter calamity’: Horror howler by Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel gifts Shakhtar Donetsk a goal

A costly error from Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel resulted in a goal during the team's 3-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Thursday morning (AEDT).

Marlon Gomes scored the visitors' first and only goal after a lapse in concentration from Kobel in the 50th minute saw him outfoxed in front of goal (watch the howler in the video above).

The shot-stopper elected to kick instead of scooping up the ball but made a mess of the clearance after Gomes chased him down.

As Gomes slid in, he poked the ball over the line to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

"Kobel, that wasn't a good touch, and what followed was utter calamity," the commentator said on Stan Sport's broadcast.

"Persistence rewarded for Marlon."

Borussia Dortmund is heading for a playoff in the Champions League after finishing 10th in the league phase.

With the draw for the knockout playoffs still to take place, Dortmund will face either Club Brugge or Sporting Lisbon for the right to play Lille or Aston Villa.
