Sri Lanka finished the day in dire straits at 3-44.
Oshada Fernando was the first gone when he was given out LBW from Matt Kuhnemann for seven. Fernando then wasted a review on the decision.
Dimuth Karunaratne was the next man gone after Mitchell Starc managed to get a short ball to rear up on a lifeless pitch.
The opener pushed at the delivery too close to his body with sub fielder Nathan McSweeney taking the catch at fourth slip. The ball went hard to McSweeney who pushed it up and managed to take it on the second effort.

Australia wasn't done taking wickets though.
With stumps approaching, Angelo Mathews pushed forward at a Nathan Lyon delivery, inside edging towards the leg side.
Head at bat-pad dived to his right and claimed a one-handed screamer to dismiss Mathews for 7.
"Magnificent catch from Travis Head," Simon Katich said on Seven's coverage.
Mathews departed at 3-30 but Dinesh Chandimal and Kamindu Mendis combined for a short partnership before rain once again brought play to a close early.
Chandimal finished on 9 while Mendis has 13. Lyon was the pick of the bowlers with 1-7 from five overs.
