Tottenham qualifies for Europa League’s last 16 after 3-0 win over IF Elfsborg

Tottenham has secured automatic qualification to the last 16 in the Europa League after a 3-0 victory over Swedish club IF Elfsborg.

And they have three academy players to thank for the victory, with all three grabbing their debut goals for the London club.

After a tight and scoreless first half, the match opened up late with Tottenham substitute Dane Scarlett scoring in the 70th minute after a cross from Dejan Kulusevski landed deep in the box from the right, before Scarlett got a head to the ball between two defenders.

Scarlett, 20, was heavily involved in the second goal for 19-year-old replacement Damola Ajayi, with a nice one-two leading to well placed shot in the bottom corner in the 85th minute.

Ange Postecoglou's men then nailed home a third late during injury time, when youngster Mikey Moore scored a wonderful finish on the cusp of the final whistle.

"Yeah made in Tottenham tonight," Postecoglou told TNT Sports post-game.

"Super pleased for the young boys. We shouldn't lose sight of the fact we had another couple of 18-year-olds out there as well.

"It's great. It's great for the club. I'm sure those boys won't sleep tonight.

"We needed that. We needed some energy. We kind of designed the game to protect some of our players – we've got a big week coming up – and we were going to need the young boys today and they stood up."

The Australian manager was dealt another injury blow when replacement Radu Dragusin went down with a knee problem in the second half.

Manchester United also advanced when Diogo Dalot tapped in a precise cross by Kobbie Mainoo on the hour mark and Mainoo netted eight minutes later for a 2-0 victory over Romanian champion FCSB in Bucharest.

Of the 36 teams in the revamped competition, the top eight go directly to the round of 16 in March.

Teams ranked ninth to 24th go into the two-legged knockout playoffs on February 13 and February 20 with the winners making the last 16.

Tottenham face an away trip to Brentford on Sunday before heading north to Anfield for the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool, which they lead 1-0.

In the Europa League Round of 16, they will face one of Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar or Midtjylland.

The draw for the next stage of the Europa League is scheduled for Saturday (AEDT).
