His spinner Matt Kuhnemann pushed the ball full with Dhananjaya prodding forward. The ball caught the outside edge of his bat and went towards the slips with Smith diving forward and taking the catch in one hand.
The umpires went to the TV umpire and replays left no doubt Smith had taken it cleanly.
"When you look back at his career everyone will talk about his runs … but just as impressive is what he does in the field," Simon Katich said on Seven.
"That was an absolute screamer and it came at a critical time too … (Dhananjaya de Silva) was starting to look dangerous."
It continues an incredible series for Smith, who has scored 272 runs at an average of 136.
His captaincy has also been first class, in particular in the first innings of the second Test when he brought on Mitchell Starc and Travis Head. Both men removed batters in their first overs.
