Sri Lanka suffers worst ever defeat as Australia dominates first Test in Galle after Matt Kuhnemann’s spin bowling masterclass

Australia has inflicted Sri Lanka's worst ever defeat after an awful display with the bat from the visitors.

Rain stayed away for the first time on day four at Galle and helped Australia maintain momentum to win by an innings and 242 runs.

"They've been completely outplayed … they have been pummeled," Greg Blewett said on the Seven Network.

Sri Lanka's previous worst defeat came in Nagpur in 2017, when they lost by an innings and 239 runs by India.

Australia started the match perfectly when they won the toss and elected to bat, declaring at 6-654 on day two.

After rain impacted day three with only 27 overs played, Sri Lanka started day four at 5-136.

The home side collapsed spectacularly in the first session, losing five wickets for 29 runs with Matthew Kuhnemann finishing with 5-63.

Australia then enforced the follow and the dominance continued when it was 2-6 early in Sri Lanka's second innings.

Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews then combined for a partnership of 69 before the former was dismissed for 31.

The wickets continued to fall, and eventually Sri Lanka were 9-209 and staring down the barrel of their worst ever defeat.

Leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay offered some resistance late in the match, smashing his way to a half-century.

Vandersay was eventually the last out for 53, off the bowling of Kuhnemann. The left-arm spinner finished with 4-86 while Nathan Lyon took 4-78.

Usman Khawaja was awarded player of the match for his double century in Australia's first innings.
