‘Shattering’ death of Troy Selwood rocks the AFL community on ‘bloody sad day’ for the game

The Selwood family is mourning the loss of Troy after the former Brisbane AFL player died on Tuesday.

Selwood, 40, was the twin brother of Adam and the older brother of Joel and Scott Selwood.

He played 75 AFL games for the Brisbane Lions from 2003 to 2010.

Victoria Police said a report would be prepared for the coroner following the death, which is "not being treated as suspicious".

"We are heartbroken by the loss of our son, brother and father, Troy this morning," the Selwood family said via the AFL.

"We will miss Troy more than words can express. Troy was a much loved and loving member of our family.

"Over the course of his life, Troy bought joy and light to all who knew him. He was a loving son of Maree and Bryce, a supportive and caring brother to Adam, Joel and Scott, and a doting father of beautiful children Tom and Sadie.

"We will miss Troy's bravery, his humour, his deep thinking, his love and compassion.

"Troy had a generosity of spirit, cared deeply about people and strove to make the lives of others better.

"We are grateful to all those that have supported Troy throughout his life, and we know that his many friends, teammates and colleagues will miss him greatly.

"Troy achieved many great things in his life. From his time as a young man and student, to his journey as an AFL player, to working in recruiting young players to help live their AFL dreams to his latest passion and adventure at Geelong Grammar School, Troy was able to influence and touch the lives of so many people.

"We know many people will reach out and share their stories of Troy, and we thank you for your love and support."

The news of Selwood's death sent shockwaves through the AFL community, with tributes pouring in throughout Tuesday afternoon.

Tony Wilson, who partnered with the four Selwood siblings to write a series of books called The Selwood Boys, described Troy's death as "a freakin disaster".

After his Lions career ended, Selwood moved back to Geelong and captained the VFL team to a premiership in 2012.

Selwood also worked on the coaching staff at Geelong – where his brother Joel is a club legend – after his own playing days.

"We are extremely saddened to learn of Troy's passing. The news today has had a deep impact on many current and former players and staff," Cats boss Steve Hocking said in a statement.

"Troy had a great spirit and energy and was someone who always cared about others. He had a passion for working with young people and helping them achieve their dreams of playing elite football.

"On behalf of the Geelong Football Club, we extend our deepest sympathies to Troy's family, children and friends."

He also worked at Collingwood for a short time and was the head of football and sport performance at prestigious school Geelong Grammar.

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon also expressed his condolences on Tuesday.

"On behalf of the AFL our thoughts are with the entire Selwood family and the wider football industry following the tragic passing of Troy Selwood," Dillon said.

"Troy was an incredible advocate for AFL talent pathways programs both in his role as a club recruiter and more recently during his time at Geelong Grammar.

"He demonstrated a core purpose to always place the needs of young players first and created environments where they could be themselves.

"Troy always bought a sense of positivity, humour and care to the recruiting and talent development process and will be sadly missed by everyone that was fortunate enough to work with him.

"We send our deepest sympathies to Joel, Adam, Scott, Bryce, Maree and the entire Selwood family, the staff and students at Geelong Grammar and all those who knew him in the football family at this time."

Tony Shaw, a legendary Collingwood figure, said it was "a bloody sad day for the AFL fraternity", with another member of the community, Dale Tapping, who had coaching roles at Essendon, the Brisbane Lions, and Collingwood, passing on the same day.

"We send our deepest sympathies to Dale's wife Kellie, and children Summer and Mason, as well as his extended family and friends," the AFL said in a statement.
