‘Not sure if I was inspired’: Elina Svitolina’s cheeky swipe after husband Gael Monfils’ gruelling win

It was a successful day at the office for powerhouse couple Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils as the pair pulled off remarkable turnarounds to both advance to the round of 16.

Monfils was first to face the action at Melbourne Park as he extended his remarkable winning streak to defeat fourth seed Taylor Fritz in a thriller four-set contest.

The Frenchman dropped 24 aces on the American rival to claim victory, but his time on the court was far from over as he shifted his focus from being a player to a spectator.

Sitting in the courtside pods, Monfils watched on as his wife Elina Svitolina battled world No.4 Jasmine Paolini in front of a stacked Margaret Court Arena.

The 28th-seeded Ukrainian may not have had the start she was hoping for but nor did Monfils against Fritz, falling short 6-2 in the opening set.

But she returned to the second set full of energy and determination which ultimately led her down the path of success.

Sealing the final scores at 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, Svitolina sealed her first top-5 win since defeating world No.2 Iga Swiatek on the All England green in 2023.

The "crazy battle" against her Italian rival added to the several upsets recorded on Saturday, but her inspiration ahead of the clash was one she wished was more simple.

"I would want to say that I got inspired after my husband's win," she laughed post-match.

"But to be fair, I played so bad in the first set so I'm not sure if I was inspired.

"I watched a little bit of it, of course – it was tough to miss (it).

"I really had to push through [against Paolini]. I'm really happy with the performance in the end."

Svitolina will return to action against two-time Australian Open quarter-finalist Veronika Kudermetova, while her husband, Monfils, will face America's Ben Shelton.
