Australian swimmer Lani Pallister won the 800m freestyle final at the world short course swimming championships in Budapest, delivering Australia's first gold at the event.

Pallister never gave up the lead from the start to clock a time of 8:01.95 – a Championship, National and Oceania record.

It came after Pallister withdrew from the 100m heats earlier in the day to focus on the 800m, just a day after claiming silver in the 400m free and women's 4x100m free relay.

She won the 800m freestyle in 2022 and only the second woman to successfully defend the title.

Pallister is the god daughter of swimming great Dawn Fraser, who suffered serious injuries in a fall this week but is on the road to recovery.

"Hearing about her fall has been both stressful and frightening, given the relationship we share," she said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Janelle and I want to express our deep heartfelt concern for Dawn's recent incident that led to her hospitalisation. Dawn is not just an extraordinary athlete and icon, she is an incredibly special part of our life, and her wellbeing is always in our thoughts.

"We are relieved to hear that she is doing well and is receiving the care she needs from her family and the hospital staff."

Australia's Alexandria Perkins won bronze in the final of the women's 50 butterfly, breaking the 15-year-old Oceania and Australian record set by Marieke Guehrer in 2009.

The medals catapulted Australia to fourth on the medal table at the World Short Course Championships in Budapest.
