‘Keeping the bar busy’: Beau Webster’s hometown of Snug ‘erupt’ for memorable Test debut

Beau Webster's hometown of Snug have "erupted" after the Australian debutant pulled off two cracking catches against India.

The 31-year-old all-rounder took the long road to the top but his decade-plus of hard work finally paid off, receiving the coveted baggy green in Sydney.

Webster played a role in perhaps the two most important wickets for the Aussies, holding onto catches to dismiss both Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) and Virat Kohli (17).

His journey to the Test arena took plenty of toiling in first-class cricket for Tasmania, but it was all worth it when he strutted his 198cm frame out onto the SCG.

Speaking to The Sydney Morning Herald, his father Rod was beaming with pride as Webster represented his local town that has an estimated population of 1500 people

"He's put Snug on the map," he said.

"Plenty of people wouldn't have ever heard of it. It's only a little town 20 kilometres out of Hobart, but it's a great little town."

Webster's hometown turned out in droves to watch him at the Snug Tavern and it was a raucous reception when the rangy debutant sent Kohli and Jaiswal on their way.

"The first catch, we erupted in here," local pitch curator Calvin Aean told the Herald.

"But the second one getting rid of Virat [Kohli], that had a great reaction given no-one seems to like him over the past few weeks. So that was pretty special.

"There's a lot of the old boys in here, his old teammates and mates of his old man, and we've been keeping the bar busy from the first ball. It's a pretty special time."

Along with his two catches, Webster finished with modest figures of 0-29 from 13 overs and is expected to bat on day two of the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy fixture.

The hosts were 1-9 at stumps after India were bowled out for 185.
