Tensions between India and Pakistan have spiked again after the Champions Trophy final presentation took place without representation from the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The PCB asked the International Cricket Council for an explanation given Pakistan was the official host of the 50-over tournament.

Former Pakistan speed demon Shoaib Akhtar also took exception in a video message posted to social media.

It's understood PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi was originally slated to be part of the presentation following the final between India and New Zealand, but could not attend because he was unwell and unable to travel to Dubai, the location of the decider.

It's also understood the PCB is perplexed as to why Sumair Ahmed, the Champions Trophy tournament director and PCB chief operating officer, wasn't included in the presentation in Naqvi's place.

India defeated New Zealand in the final by four wickets, chasing down the Black Caps' 251 with six balls to spare.

"India have won the Champions Trophy, but I noticed something rather strange," Akhtar said on social media.

"There wasn't a single representative from the PCB on the podium, even though Pakistan was the host of the tournament.

"I can't understand why no one was there to represent the country. It's beyond me to even think about. There should have been someone on this world stage.

"Unfortunately, I didn't see any PCB members out there."

The ICC explained the absence of PCB representation in a statement provided to the publication India Today.

"Mr Naqvi was unavailable and didn't travel. As per understanding, only office bearers can be called for trophy presentation, so from PCB no office bearer was available for the same," the statement said.

Indian supremo Jay Shah, the chairman of the ICC, was part of the presentation.

There were also two representatives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India and one representative of New Zealand Cricket.

The BCCI refused to send its team to Pakistan for any Champions Trophy matches.

The Rohit Sharma-skippered team instead played every one of its matches in Dubai, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

For that reason, India's Champions Trophy win is accompanied by an asterisk in the eyes of many.

Respected English cricket commentator Johnathan Agnew said it was a "farce" that the ICC had allowed India to avoid playing in Pakistan.
