‘History in the making’: Australian women whitewash Ashes series 16-0 after comprehensive Test victory

Australia has cruised through to an innings and 122-run victory over England in their Ashes Test match at the MCG, making history as the first side to go undefeated throughout the entire series since the points system.

The host nation completed the victory on day three of the four-day Test, capped off by two centuries and a wickets galore for a plethora of Australian stars.

It also caps off a whitewash of the Ashes, with Australia claiming the series 16-0, winning all of their ODIs, T20s and the single Test match convincingly.

Alana King's efforts on day three, taking 5-53 alongside fellow bowler Ash Gardner (4-39), controlled England's batters from the first ball.

But it did take five dropped catches to finally dislodge England's final-wicket partnership before celebrations began on the MCG.

England's Maia Bouchier (1 off 12) fell in the third over, before a small heartbeat was resurrected for the visitors, with Tammy Beaumont (47 off 124) and Heather Knight (32 off 75) pulling their side back into the match.

It was then King and Gardner who got to work, taking the remaining nine wickets after Darcie Brown's opening zinger.

Lauren Bell and Lauren Filer were saved at the crease a whopping five times before Filer's (14 off 45) eventual dismissal, dropped by Georgia Voll at short leg and missed twice in the MCG floodlights by Tahlia McGrath and Brown.

The slips watched a Filer edge go between them, leaving King on her haunches as another opportunity went begging.

But finally, the opportunity arose, with Sutherland taking the final catch to put England to bed once and for all.

"History in the making. Australia have gone through and won every match of the Ashes series," Mel Jones said on Fox after the win.

"The first time it has ever happened.

"This legacy that this team is building just grows and grows every competition they're playing."

To start the third and final day of proceedings, it was all eyes on Beth Mooney, who left stumps on day two on a nervous 98 not out.

It didn't take long for the Australian veteran to reach her ton, making history as the first female cricketer to record centuries across all three formats at the international level.

Her name will be etched alongside teammate Annabel Sutherland, who became the first woman to record a Test century on the MCG, just a day earlier than Mooney's feat.

Mooney went on to make 106 off 173, headlined by six boundaries.

Australia managed 440, forcing a near-impossible chase for England.

England left-arm spin bowler Sophie Ecclestone was the only shining light for the visitors, taking 5-143 after a nightmare start for her side with ball in hand.

That nightmare fielding effort was headlined by two drops of eventual centurion Sutherland on day two, when she was early in her batting innings.

An impressive total of 35,365 attended the Test match across the three days at the MCG.
