EXCLUSIVE: ‘Etch my name into history’: Aussie sevens star Maddison Levi explains ‘enticing’ Rugby World Cup plans

Maddison Levi took the world by storm this year in rugby sevens, but the young superstar is eyeing off a new challenge in 2025.

In a massive boost for Australia ahead of next year's World Cup, some of the best female sevens players on the planet have committed to play in the Super Rugby competition.

Both the Levi sisters, Charlotte Caslick and Bella Nasser will be vying for a spot in the Wallaroos squad for the major tournament, which kicks off in the UK next August.

Speaking to Wide World Of Sports, the 22-year-old Levi opened up on the big decision, which will see her play both versions of the code moving forward.

"It's such a fast-growing sport and to have the ability to have a chance to play in a World Cup next year is something that is very enticing," she said.

"I feel like being in a professional environment with the sevens and the skills we learn day-in and day-out hopefully can transfer. I guess it's a little bit of a different game, but at the end of the day, I think most of it works hand-in-hand.

"I think the things we excel at, we can bring over to the 15s and they can teach us a lot in things like physicality and being able to find space when there's no space as well.

"I think the World Cup is something really exciting. Not many people get to represent their country in one sport and the opportunity to potentially represent each other in two sports is something really exciting.

"Looking at the Irish and Kiwi players who have been able to transfer their skills and really excel, it gives me some confidence that I can do the same in my transition."

Levi has enjoyed a breakout year in the green and gold jersey, starring at Paris 2024 as the side made it through to the bronze medal match.

During her second Olympics, the speedster scored 14 of Australia's 24 total tries, before she also became the fastest Aussie to score 100 tries in the Worlds Sevens Series.

Last month, Levi was named the World Rugby Women's Sevens Player of the Year, joining star teammate Caslick among the honours list.

With the hype and expectation around Levi only growing off the back of a stellar few months, which included a triumph for the Aussies in the Dubai tournament, there's an air of quiet confidence that should have fans excited for her career.

"I was definitely shocked [by the award]," she said.

"I don't think it has really sunk in because we went straight to Dubai and Cape Town.

"Once I get home to my family I will be able to celebrate it and look back on the year that I've had – but it's really such a surreal feeling. For me as an athlete, I do put a lot of pressure on myself, but that only helps me to grow.

"The exciting thing is that I'm still so young and only 22 years old and there is still so much I have to learn in the sport. It's about going back to the drawing board and working out what I can do to get better, both as a person and an athlete.

"Being young is kind of a positive thing because I have already achieved so much and I want to etch my name in history and I'm definitely on the right track at the moment."

Plans to become a dual-international next year are lofty goals, but given her recent exploits in the sevens, there's plenty of reason to believe she can make it happen.

Levi and her younger sister Teagan will both play for the Queensland Reds, with the season set to begin in late February.
