England rue two missed chances to dismiss Annabel Sutherland as she cruises to historic MCG century

Annabel Sutherland survived two dropped catches courtesy of England, as she made history with her Ashes Test century on day two at the MCG.

The Victorian has become the first woman to score a Test ton at the iconic MCG, getting there in 193 balls.

But it came after early scares as the visitors attempted to get on top of Australia early on day two.

The 23-year-old was firstly dropped at point by Danni Wyatt-Hodge when she was on just 29 off 66.

"This wasn't a half-chance, this was a full chance," Mel Jones said on Fox after the first England mistake.

Just a few balls later, the batter was handed another lifeline, with England wicket-keeper Amy Jones putting down a chance off Sophie Ecclestone's bowling.

Then, only three balls later, Sutherland made England pay, smacking a six.

She would go on to bring up her hundred right before the dinner break.

Her efforts left teammate and batting partner Beth Mooney in awe.

"She's made a statement, hasn't she. She's been crying out for opportunity up the order and absolutely nailed it," Mooney said on Fox during the dinner break.

"I got goosebumps out there for her."

Sutherland's Test ton makes her just the third Australian woman to score three Test centuries.

She joins Betty Wilson and Jill Kennare with her MCG efforts.

Sutherland was eventually bowled in the 91st over by Ryana MacDonald-Gay after making 163 off 258.

She received a standing ovation from the MCG crowd, taking a moment to soak in the applause.
