‘Bit silly’: Scottie Scheffler and Tiger Woods fed up with Ryder Cup pay dispute

Scottie Scheffler has admitted to feeling the fatigue of the debate around the total money in men's professional golf as discussions around Ryder Cup payments continue.

Discussions on player compensation have been linked to the reported change to the Ryder Cup, with the US team set to be paid for the first time in the tournament's history in 2025.

A report by the Telegraph stated the PGA of America planned to pay each of their players roughly $622,000 for the week of the tournament following debate around whether athletes should continue competing in prestigious tournaments for free.

But the questions surrounding the debate have left Scheffler fed up, with the world no.1 opting to make light of the situation ahead of the Hero World Challenge.

"I think most of the time we just talk about money and how the purses need to be bigger," Scheffler said, tongue in cheek, as he replied to a question about his conversation with Tiger Woods on the course.

"Today we really grinded on the Ryder Cup and how it's just such BS that we've never gotten paid.

"Tiger was really frustrated, he feels like he hasn't made enough money in his career."

Team Europe remain firm with their decision to continue the tradition of not providing monetary compensation for players who compete in the Ryder Cup, while the PGA of America have yet to confirm the proposed change.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy previously declared he would "pay for the privilege to play in the Ryder Cup", given the prestigious nature of the tournament.

Scheffler said he and many of his teammates are in agreement with McIlroy on the matter, but the reality of actioning the idea "would be a little bit silly."

"Every one of our players would pay to play in the Ryder Cup if that's what was asked of us," the 28-year-old said.

"I think it's a little bit silly for a tournament that makes hundreds of millions of dollars to ask for the players to pay as well, but I think we all would. I definitely would.

"We've been playing in the Ryder Cup for free for a long time.

"If they want to pay us to play in the tournament, that's great. The last few years they've given us some money that we can give to charity.

"I don't think it takes away from the competition at all."

The PGA of America has traditionally donated over $210,000 AUD per player at the Ryder Cup to the development of junior golf and a charity of the player's choice, with Woods remaining a major advocate for process to continue.

“I hope they would get $5 million (USD) each and donate it all to charity, different charities,” Woods said on Tuesday.

“I think it's great. What's wrong with that?”

“We didn't want to get paid, we wanted to give more money to charity, and the media turned it around against us and said we want to get paid. The Ryder Cup itself makes so much money, why can’t we allocate it to various charities?

"And what’s wrong with each player, 12 players getting $1 million (USD) and the ability to divvy out to amazing charities that they’re involved in that they can help out?”
