Australia claim miraculous series lead after final session heroics lead to 7-34 collapse from India

Australia has claimed a remarkable 2-1 series lead after India lost seven wickets for 34 runs in the final session of the Boxing Day Test.

Nathan Lyon, Travis Head, Scott Boland and Pat Cummins all took wickets in after tea on day five as Australia finished with an 184-run win.

Mitchell Starc agreed it was one of the best wins of his career.

"It's got to be up there with the grand final … fantastic way to finish the week, it's been five fantastic days of Test cricket," he told Fox Cricket.

Australia started day five at the MCG at 9-228 with a lead of 333. Nathan Lyon was eventually bowled for 41, setting India a target of 340 with Jasprit Bumrah claiming five wickets.

Openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal lasted 16 overs before Sharma was dismissed by Pat Cummins for 9.

India's top order then capitulated to be 3-33 with KL Rahul (0) and Virat Kohli (5) both departing.

Victory then seemed unlikely when India reached the tea break three wickets down.

However, a brain fade from Rishabh Pant handed Australia a glimpse at victory. The wicket-keeper batter hit a half-tracker from Travis Head to Mitchell Marsh in the boundary to make it 4-121.

Ravindra Jadeja (2) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (1) were both gone quickly after before controversy struck.

Nearing a century, Yashasvi Jaiswal attempted a pull shot off Cummins with an appeal for caught behind given not out. Australia reviewed with replays showing a deflection but Snicko didn't have a noticeable spike.

The third umpire overturned the decision though, much to Jaiswal's fury as he left the ground after a well-made 84.

Akash Deep was also given not out after a catch popped up to Travis Head. Cummins reviewed again and the decision was overturned.

Bumrah walked off for a duck moments later after sharp catch from Steve Smith at slip while Mohammed Siraj (0) was the last man out, dismissed lbw off Nathan Lyon.

Washington Sundar finished not out on five with India bowled out for 155.

Post-game, Cummins, who was awarded player of the match, described the win as "one of the best I've been a part of".

Australia now head to the SCG on January 3 with one hand on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
