Aussie sensation Nestory Irankunda loaned to top-flight Swiss team from Bayern Munich

Teen football sensation Nestory Irankunda debut with Bayern Munich has been delayed as the club agreed to a loan deal with Grasshopper Club Zurich.

The deal will see the forward remain in Switzerland until the end of the season alongside Socceroos teammate Awer Mabil.

The 18-year-old has been impressive in the Bayern Munich's under-23 side in the first half of the season, finding the back of the net four times in 15 appearances.

Irankunda has also found four assists in his time with the reserve team and was named on the bench during the club's recent Champions League campaign but was not fielded.

He first joined the German giants in November 2023.

"Nestory has integrated very well after his move from Australia to Europe and has repeatedly shown his great talent with our reserves," Bayern campus director Jochen Sauer said of the loan.

"We're convinced he'll take the next sporting steps in the Swiss top tier at GC Zurich. We'll continue to support him very closely on his journey."

Grasshoppers have had a rough start to the 2024-25 season, sitting second from the bottom after 18 games.

The Aussie forward cited the opportunity to further his development as an exciting factor in his move.

Grasshoppers' sporting director Stephan Schwarz added that the club is excited to see Irankunda will bring to the team.

"Irankunda is a young and exciting talent with dynamism and the ability to ignite the attack," Schwarz said.

"Obviously you want to be playing, you want to be playing at a top level, first league, first division and at a good club also," Irankunda told Network 10.

"I've been in talks with the club and also the coaches about going on loan, because I feel like it will be better for me. I have to be playing, I can't keep playing under-23's every week. So I'm in talks with them, and hopefully I get a club soon."
