For many shoppers, Black Friday sales are all about striking the best deals and saving money, with 58 per cent of Australians planning to participate this year.But for many, discounts aren't enough.In fact, around 50 per cent of Australian consumers plan to use at least one tactic to save even more money during this year's sales, according to new Canstar Blue research.

Discount codes are the most popular method of snagging a bargain, with almost a third of shoppers planning to use multiple discount codes at an online checkout.Checking retailer apps for app-exclusive deals (21 per cent), monitoring social media for flash sales or secret deals (26 per cent), and purchasing through cashback sites (22 per cent) came in as the next most popular tactics.Others plan to use gift cards they purchased at a discount to buy during the sales events (16 per cent).But is all the effort worth it?According to the survey, 13 per cent think that Black Friday discounts are automatically a good deal."There's a chance you could be right – but you might also be wrong," Canstar Blue spokesperson Eden Radford said."Take a few extra minutes to check prices and ensure you really have landed a deal before heading to the checkout."Better yet, spend a few minutes before hitting the shops – whether online or in-store – to do your research and make sure you're getting the absolute best deal you can."

Almost every major brand now takes part in Black Friday deals, from Dyson, to Weber to Apple and Amazon.Major department stores, such as Myer and Rebel Sports will also heavily promote Black Friday deals.Basically, all major retailers will get involved – the key is to work out when they drop their best deals, particularly if they are limited offers.

How to get the most out of Black Friday deals

Before you get caught up in the rush of a discount, here are some tips to strike an even bigger bargain (and overspend less) during this year's Black Friday frenzy.

  • Set a budget: Work out how much you can afford to spend and stick to that budget.
  • Create a shopping list: Know exactly what you want to buy and don't get distracted.
  • Do your research: Compare offers from at least three different stores before buying.
  • Factor in shipping: Make sure you're calculating the cost of each delivery into your budget.
  • Buy from trusted and verified sites only: Ensure the sites you use are legitimate and you always make payments through secure platforms.
