Man charged after alleged bungled Sydney ambush led to chase and shots fired at police car

Police rushed to Edensor Park after two armed men were allegedly seen trying to break into a home

A man has been charged after an alleged bungled shooting resulted in a high-speed chase through south-west Sydney.

Police had attended a home in Edensor Park about 1.30am on Tuesday after two men armed with guns were allegedly seen trying to break into a property, before leaving in a Hyundai sedan.

The home is believed to be connected to organised crime groups, according to police deputy commissioner Peter Thurtell.

“It is concerning to police that somebody so brazenly armed with a firearm would go up to the front door of a residential premises,” he told reporters.

“The residents of that premises were fortunate not to be home at the time.”

Police established a crime scene and began inquiries. They located a Hyundai, which sparked a pursuit along Cowpasture Road, Hinchinbrook.

During the pursuit, an occupant of the vehicle allegedly fired shots at a police vehicle. No police officers were injured. `

The pursuit was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns. However, officers used road spikes to stop the vehicle soon after.

The driver of the vehicle – a 20-year-old man – was arrested and later charged. The male passenger fled on foot.

The 20-year-old man was charged with nine offences including special aggravated break and enter with intent while armed with a dangerous weapon, possessing or using a military-style weapon without a permit and not stopping and driving recklessly during a police pursuit.

He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta local court on Wednesday.

“One of the firearms located in the vehicle is believed to be the firearm that shot at the police officers and the police vehicle,” Thurtell said.

“The dog squad officer is fortunate not to be injured but is also very lucky that those projectiles didn’t hit him or his dog.”

During the search of the car, police allegedly found and seized two pistols, an assault rifle and other weapons. A number of spent cartridges were located and seized at the scene.

The vehicle was also seized for forensic examination.
