The ABC’s managing director has conceded the process of removing Antoinette Lattouf from the broadcaster in December 2023 was “completely abnormal from start to finish”.

David Anderson made the admission during his second day in the witness box at the federal court, where he was pressed on his views about whether there was a Lebanese race and called Lattouf’s appointment “a mistake” because she advocated for “one perspective” on the Israel-Gaza war.

The hearing continues on Friday.

“There is no doubt there’s a short-term political assessment, hopefully to get this issue off the table, which you will not achieve.”

The former long-serving Labor senator Kim Carr has scolded his former party for breaking with its policy platform on mandatory jail terms.

The funding, which will provide up to $1m for eight local governments affected by the flooding, is part of a disaster relief package which includes $1,000 for eligible adults and $400 for children affected in designated areas. The announcement comes as the area braces for a further deluge.
