Mitch Marsh ruled out of ICC Men’s Championship Trophy as details of ‘ongoing’ back injury revealed

Australian all-rounder Mitch Marsh will miss the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, with "ongoing lower back pain and dysfunction".

Cricket Australia confirmed on Friday that Marsh will miss the ODI tournament in Pakistan and the UAE next month, as he continues to battle a back injury that's hampered him in recent weeks.

Marsh, who was dropped ahead of Australia's Test side before the final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, was not selected in the squad to tour Sri Lanka.

CA confirmed the 33-year-old has been struggling through his rehabiliation.

"The national selection panel (NSP) and Australian men's medical team ruled Marsh out of the tournament with the injury which has not responded sufficiently to rehabilitation," CA said in a statement on Friday.

"His lower back pain flared in recent weeks leading the NSP to make the longer term decision for Marsh to complete a more extended period of rehabilitation.

"Marsh will now undergo a period of further rest and rehabilitation as part of his return to play plan."

As for what lies ahead, the selection panel will be forced to name a replacement.

"The deadline for the final squads for the ICC Men's Champion's Trophy is prior to Wednesday 12 February," CA confirmed.

Marsh's own cricketing future is in jeopardy, with fears he could miss the Indian Premier League, after being picked up by the Lucknow Supergiants for $623,000.

There are further concerns for Marsh's involvement in the World Test Championship final against South Africa, being held at Lord's in July.
