Ben Hunt reveals Broncos role as veterans set to form oldest halves pairing in the NRL

Brisbane will have the oldest halves pairing in the NRL to start the 2025 season after Ben Hunt confirmed where he will be playing.

The veteran playmaker told 9News Queensland he will start the season at five-eighth, while young gun Ezra Mam serves a nine-game suspension.

Hunt will don the No.6 jumper and partner fellow elder statesman Adam Reynolds in the halves.

Both men are 34 years old – and Hunt turns 35 in March – which makes their combined age the highest of any starting halves in the NRL.

Manly's Daly Cherry-Evans and Luke Brooks have both also graduated from their 20s, but their combined age is only 65.

Melbourne's Jahrome Hughes and Cameron Munster are both 30.

Hunt says he will play in the halves until Mam comes back, and then plans to move to hooker.

Those three stars will join fullback phenom Reece Walsh in what may turn out to be the best spine in the league this year.

"I weighed everything up and looked at the roster," he said.

"I thought it's something that I could still enjoy, still get a lot of out myself in that role and help contribute to what I believe – if we're all fit – one of the best spines in the competition.

"I'm a bit excited about it."

Hunt's move to hooker will be intriguing, given he's been a halfback throughout his NRL career but played dummy-half at State of Origin for Queensland.

It leaves the likes of Billy Walters and Blake Mozer in limbo.

The Broncos were dismal in 2024 – coming off playing a grand final the year prior – and finished in 12th spot in a catastrophe that cost Kevin Walters his job as coach.

Michael Maguire has taken the reins at Red Hill.

Brisbane kicks off its campaign against the Roosters on March 6.
