‘Gone down in legend’: Rugby world mourns death of iconic captain

Peter Brown, the former Scotland rugby captain who still holds the national record for most points by a forward, has died.

He was 83.

Brown's family, through the Scottish Rugby Union, said he'd undergone several years of chemotherapy for myeloma, a form of blood cancer.

Brown fell at home last week, was admitted to hospital, and died on Monday (AEDT).

Known as 'PC' because his first two names were Peter Currie, Brown won 27 caps at lock and No.8 and led Scotland in 10 Tests between 1964-73.

He played alongside his younger brother Gordon, who died in 2001, in 12 Tests.

Brown racked up 66 points for Scotland, a record for a forward that still stands.

He enjoyed five wins over England plus victories against South Africa and Australia.

He was part of the Scotland team that drew with New Zealand 0-0 in 1964, and afterwards swapped jerseys with Colin Meads.

All three of his tries were against England but his most memorable points were the match winning conversion against England in 1971, when Scotland won at Twickenham for the first time since 1938.

"PC was great company and his passion for Scottish rugby and the game in general always shone brightly," Scotland coach Gregor Townsend said.

"His exploits on the field have gone down in legend, being a key contributor in some Scotland famous wins during his international career."

Brown was born into a sporting family.

His father Jock was a goalkeeper who was capped by Scotland, and his uncle, Jim, moved to the United States and played for the Americans in the 1930 football World Cup.

Brother Gordon played eight Tests on three British and Irish Lions tours, including their two greatest, 1971 in New Zealand and 1974 in South Africa.
