‘Not ideal’: Cooper Connolly goes from crucial BBL win to 3am alarm as Test debut awaits

Cooper Connolly produced a match-winning display for the Perth Scorchers to help keep their Big Bash finals hopes alive on Saturday night.

But for the young all-rounder, his celebrations were extremely short-lived.

Connolly smashed 39 not-out off 21 deliveries to give the Scorchers a five-wicket win over the Adelaide Strikers, belting four maximums in the process.

It was another fine performance from Connolly, who sits atop the BBL run-scoring leaderboard, as the Scorchers now wait to learn their finals fate.

Should the table-topping Hobart Hurricanes defeat the Melbourne Stars on Sunday, the five-time champs will sneak into fourth spot despite a disappointing campaign.

"It is very strange," Connolly told Fox Cricket post-game.

"We've got to sit on tomorrow and hopefully the Hurricanes can get over the line.

"Hopefully Mitch Owen can get going, he's had a really good year … I will get behind him and hopefully he can smack a few."

While his teammates will be sweating on the result, the 21-year-old rising star will be heading over to Dubai to begin preparations for a potential Test debut.

Connolly was recently selected in the Australian squad for their two-game tour of Sri Lanka and is a red-hot chance of earning his first baggy green, but revealed he needed to be up in the early hours of Sunday morning to make the trip with the squad.

"I've probably got to be up at about 3am for a 6am flight – it's not ideal, but I guess I will take that," he said.

"I'm stoked to be going to Sri Lanka tomorrow, but it's gonna be an early wake up."

Connolly also explained the phone call he received from the selectors to inform him of his dream coming to fruition, despite having just four first-class games to his name.

"I was at home actually and mum was about to cry," he said.

"Tony Dodemaide called me and I had a big smile on my face and she started covering her mouth. Dad was sitting there the same and I think they are pretty stoked for me.

"I'm just looking forward to getting over there, it's gonna be an amazing trip with some quality coaches and quality players."
