Jeremiah Nanai has been axed by the Cowboys just one game into the NRL season.

The talented State of Origin back-rower will play reserve grade this weekend, with Todd Payten making a huge call after their dismal round one defeat at the hands of Manly.

Nanai is one of the club's most dangerous players, but there are issues with his defence.

"Jeremiah is an elite attacking player and he needs to improve some defensive parts of his game and will get some time in Q Cup to do that," the coach said.

"It wasn't an easy decision, but I just felt it was important for the group."

Elsewhere, the teams who played in Las Vegas will be back on deck, while the Titans will play their first game of 2025 after receiving a first-round bye.
