A tricky period for the Matildas has just got even worse, with the national team falling to their record-lowest ranking ever.

Fresh off a winless campaign in the SheBelieves Cup, the Aussies have now been dealt a cruel blow after FIFA unveiled their updated list.

The green and gold outfit now sit in 16th spot – their equal-lowest in history and the worst spot they have been placed in for 20 years.

While they won the hearts and minds of fans in the 2023 World Cup on home soil, things haven't gone exactly to plan for the Matildas since then.

The absence of superstar Sam Kerr has been a major hurdle that the Aussies have battled to overcome, failing to make the knockout stages at the Paris Olympics.

More recently, the Matildas lost all three of their matches against Japan, United States and Colombia in a campaign at the SheBelieves Cup that drew plenty of criticism.

It has seen the Aussies drop one spot, leapfrogged by Norway.

Elsewhere in the rankings, the top-four teams of USA, Spain, Germany and England have all stayed the same, with Japan the big movers after rising from eighth to fifth.

Sweden, Canada and Brazil have all dropped one spot, but remain inside the top 10.
